Cinquain Writing Assignment

Purpose of assignment: to write creatively in French; to enhance vocabulary; to describe a person; to practice use of adjectives (forms and placement)

A cinquain is a five line poem. While there are a couple variations in form, for our purposes we will use the following:

Line 1: a noun

Line 2: three adjectives that agree with the noun

Line 3: three verbs (infinitives)

Line 4: a short phrase of four words about the noun

Line 5: a synonym to the first noun, or a simple re-statement of the noun

Directions: For this assignment, you will write a cinquain about yourself (you are the subject (noun) of the poem)! Accompany your cinquain with an illustration, either a photo or a drawing (using the example above as a model). Put the illustration and cinquain on 8 ½ X 11 white or colored paper so that we can display it in the classroom. It must be neat, legible, and colorful. The adjectives must agree with and be appropriate for the noun. Be creative and have fun with this assignment…..The “you” in the cinquain can be an “alter ego” and does not need to resemble your “true self”, for example.
